How do you navigate a society that measures your worth by how much you’ve earned, especially when research isn’t always the most profitable path? It’s wild how much the world around us ends up shaping how we think and behave.

yes, this is why sideprojects that you do for your own self are so important.

i think passion is kind of misinterpreted. I dont think einstein was bothered by the question of acceleration as much as we believe to be. Its more curiosity driven and a desire to solve hard problems. Richard Feynman tried his hands at practically everything and what stood out was how fascinating everything looked to him and how he interpreted stuff from Physics to something as trivial as hotel room booking. Imo the point of research is the same as building anything else, doing hard problems and finding a way out. The more i figure out PhD the more i feel its like a startup where you have to drive every single detail yourself. And fields change so quickly that the real passion is not in the question but rather why even bother with this question

Even I think Curiosity is a better way to express it rather than passion. The start-up analogy is also great.

Fortunately. We, millenials, do love joy of struggle mostly just like our forefathers. Unfortunately, I dont see it in new Gen. I am worried about instant gratification.

I love this sentiment. It's exactly why I've started to write articles (haven't published just yet), but every time I start, I realize there's so much I don't know and start reading and watching everything related to the topic. The writing process is really just a way to get to answer our own questions and satisfy our curiosity. which tbh I feel like is the point of life lol

This is an excellent post, thank you for writing this. As someone new with only a couple of projects in experience, this is the most useful thing I've read. I think I can feel what you mean by synthesing the answers in your own way and how research questions are very personal. When I recently started my blog as a passion project, as I was ideation about ideas I suddenly felt so free and overcome with excitement when I felt no constraint on me about the deliverable or the timeline.
